The developer of the online sci-fi action RPG Warframe has promised a new free game that will bring fantasy to the action MMORPG craze. The developer, Digital Extremes, showed some videos, but we don’t know much about the game called Soulframe.

Warframe Dev Announces Soulframe, Free-to-Play Action MMORPG

Digital Extremes presented its plans for the new titles and Warframe at TennoCon 2022. Along with two significant improvements for Warframe (and new Warframes), Digital Extremes also revealed a brand-new game still in the early stages of development and a publishing deal with Airship Syndicate, the developer of Battle Chasers and Darksiders Genesis.

Soulframe is a free-to-play open-world adventure greatly influenced by themes of nature, restoration, and exploration, along with such masterpieces as Princess Mononoke and The NeverEnding Story. The studio considers it will create a world “where industry and nature collide thanks to these ideas.” However, the planet will behave negatively towards the players occupying it to achieve this.

Players can reserve their in-game names and get information about Soulframe by registering their email and solving an interactive challenge on the official website. Although the game is currently in its very early stages of development, Digital Extremes emphasizes that it will focus on cooperative player-versus-environment combat and randomly generated landscapes, much like Warframe.

“Our work has been extremely community-driven,” said Steve Sinclair, the director of Warframe. “It feels disingenuous not to tell about changes and who’s leading ‘Warframe.’ It’s way too early to announce ‘Soulframe,’ but in terms of transparency and making sure they understand how we think, we tend to be a lot more open than most studios.”

“With Soulframe’s worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up,” said Geoff Crookes, Creative Director of Soulframe. “So there’s going to be proceduralism within the cave networks and crevasses and so on underneath the world.”
