Ground control to player one. Take your protein pills and put your headphones on. Kalypso Media and Realmforge Studios has just announced that their upcoming space station strategy simulator, Spacebase Startopia, is now available to “pre-purchase and play immediately” on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A preview of Spacebase Startopia was also released via YouTube. Players can pre-purchase the game at a 10% discount through the Kalypso Store, Xbox Game Preview, or Steam. Those who take on this deal will also get “unfiltered access to the beta” and, of course, the full game once it releases on Xbox devices via Smart Delivery. Spacebase Startopia will be launching this Spring on the previously mentioned devices as well as on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

Spacebase Startopia

Spacebase Startopia a unique simulator that allows players to run their very own “donut-shaped” space station. That’s right. You’re in command, Major Tom. You will manage your base while juggling responsibilities related to city-building and RTS skirmishes.

Of course, what would a space game be without extraterrestrial encounters? Your station will be filled with “a melting pot” of different alien races, each with their own interests and dislikes. If managing alien Karens isn’t challenging enough for you, there will also be space pirates who will try to ruin your intergalactic party. So stay sharp, or everything you’ve worked for might fall into dirty hands. Spacebase Startopia will have three game modes and indeed “a vast amount of management decisions.”

Players will be under the supervision of the “station’s sardonic AI” named VAL. I’m sure VAL wouldn’t sever your oxygen hose while on a spacewalk or anything. Maybe it’s a good idea to make sure you have a way to open those pod bay doors. Just in case.

Other Features

  • Single-player campaign with voice-acted missions
  • Multiplayer game modes such as Quick Match, Skirmish Mode, and Co-op
  • Individually configurable sandbox mode
  • Produce and trade resources for profit
  • Sabotage missions to get an advantage over the competition

Through Spacebase Startopia, Realmforge Studios is creating “a careful balance between nostalgia and innovation in its reimagining of the popular strategy game.” This management simulator is certainly unique, and I can’t wait to see where this will take the genre.
