Yager Development, the team behind games like Spec Ops: The Line and Dreadnought, has revealed its new project—a multiplayer first-person shooter on an alien world. It’s called The Cycle.

Due to start a closed alpha in the “next few weeks,” The Cycle is “a match-based FPS where you compete to fulfill contracts (quests) during a match that lasts approximately 20 mins. Staying on the planet for longer than that is bad for your health,” according to the game’s official website.

Yager did not reveal any in-game footage, but the above video of the game’s environments should give a hint as to the kind of vibe The Cycle is going for. The game is set on an alien world called Fortuna III, rife with funky alien life.

The website teases customizable gear options, a home base of operations, and details on player count. It says that there will be 20 players per match “and lots more alien monsters, plus some cute Fortuna III native wildlife.” There’s also a hint as to what the titular ‘cycle’ actually is.

“Far as we can tell, this rock was terraformed by aliens a long time ago,” a blurb on the website teases. “The Federation tried colonizing it, but the Cycle put an end to that. We’re talking world-spanning storms that kill anything dumb enough to set foot planetside and these storms are happening more often than not.”

Storms that will kill you, forcing matches to only last around 20 minutes? This sounds a bit like a battle royale mode, but Yager never uses that trendy term in describing The Cycle. We’ll know more in the next few weeks, but for now, all we can do is peruse the website for clues.

The Cycle will initially release only on PC via Steam with plans to bring it to consoles.
