The wizard royale launched in 2018 and is closing its doors next year. Spellbreak shutting down came as quite a surprise for everyone. While the battle royale market is still dominated by Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone, this announcement was unexpected. When Spellbreak launched back in 2018, the game showed promise. It was a battle royale, yes, but the concept was fresh. Players had gauntlets instead of weapons, and each gauntlet had different spells. The style of the game was also good and caught many people’s attention. But maybe the timing wasn’t right. And now it’s sad to hear Spellbreak is shutting down in 2023.

Spellbreak Will Shut Down Its Servers in Early 2023

It has become common to see new battle royales every day. Recently we saw the release of Vampire the Mascarade – Bloodhunt, which we can say was a fresh take on the whole genre. Maybe not too fresh because the goals are the same. You or your team need to be the last one standing. However, every battle royale has different gimmicks. It comes as a surprise to hear about Spellbreak shutting down. While the goal was the same, this game has its own gimmicks, and they were fun. It is sad to see a game go, but it is even more heartbreaking to think about the developers who worked on that game. However, there is a silver lining to all of this.

Activision Blizzard announced that they will be buying the studio that created Spellbreak. This with the goal of putting more work into World of Warcraft’s upcoming expansion: Dragonflight. This is something good because we already know that the expansion will release this year, as we can see on the pre-order website. Putting more people there now that we know about Spellbreak shutting down is good. These developers will direct their experience towards a game that really needs improvement. It has been a couple of rocky months for Activision Blizzard. All of that combined with the latest backlash towards Diablo Immortal. We all hope that acquiring this studio brings fresh ideas to what we hope is Activision Blizzard’s redemption.
