Inklings are the main protagonists in the story. They are humanoids that can take squid form when in the water. Like Inklings, Octolings are also humanoid forms, the difference being that their swimming form is octopus and not squid. The Octolings used to be adversarial, but they now seek peace and unification with the Inklings via the efforts of Dj Octavio.
Octolings hairstyles feature function cups like those of an octopus on top of their heads. It is a key distinguishing feature between them and the Inklings. Also, the black markings on their faces do not connect at the centre, as with Inklings.
