SpongeBob Squarepants spin-off is in the works at Nickelodeon, this time starring SpongeBob’s partner-in-crime Patrick Star.

Deadline and Variety have reported that the animated spinoff centered on SpongeBob’s best friend Patrick Star will dive deep into the lives of Patrick and his family as the friendly starfish – who will continue to be voiced by Bill Fagerbakke – hosts a talk show.

In early 2019, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins announced that the network was working on its first spinoff projects with SpongeBob SquarePants characters. The first of them to be greenlit was the 13-episode CG-animated SpongeBob prequel series,  Kamp Koral –  which recently moved from Nickelodeon to streamer CBS All Access -with The Patrick Star Show being the second.

Created by the late Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon SpongeBob SquarePants which chronicles the nautical, nonsensical adventures of eternally optimistic and earnest sea sponge SpongeBob and his undersea friends, launched in 1999.

The show and its beloved characters have not only reigned as the No 1 kids’ animated series on TV for the past 18 years but also gone on to reach cult status with its pop-culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases – the latest movie in the franchise being The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run which will be released on VOD early next year- and even a Tony-winning Broadway musical.

Sources have revealed the spin-off will introduce several new characters voiced by new actors. It’s also not known if any of the other Spongebob characters will be reprising their roles.

However, Fagerbakke who has been voicing Patrick since 1999, will be returning. He also known for playing Dauber on ABC’s Coach for nine years,  Jason Segal’s dad on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother with recurring roles in Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here and Netflix’s Unbelievable.
