Open-world games are all the rage these days. The latest games from Square Enix show that they understand this trend. Their new upcoming PS5 exclusive, Project Athia, is the newest addition to the Square Enix franchise and the newest one to get the open-world treatment. Square Enix announced Project Athia at the PS5 reveal event as an exclusive game. The trailer was a teaser and it left gamers with a lot of questions about a lot of the game’s details. Recently, Square Enix gave an interview with Weekly Tokyo Keizai Plus regarding many of their projects, among them Project Athia.
The president of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, mentioned in the interview that the upcoming game was slated to be an open-world action-adventure game. This comes as no surprise given the popularity of many open-world adventure games, such as The Last of Us 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and even some of the Final Fantasy games. Square Enix has some success with open-world games before, although many of their games, like The Final Fantasy 7 Remake were not completely open-world.
The trailer did showcase more than a few elements that make open-world games great, with dynamic movement and combat. There is a lot, however, that we do not know about Project Athia. The combat style, plot, and setting are all a mystery and those are important questions that gamers will want answers to as the release date for the PS5 approaches.
It is also unclear if Project Athia will be a release title for the PS5. No official release date has even been hinted at and the release of the PS5 is just a few short months away. Regardless, the trailer hints at a game that hits all the marks of an interesting open-world game. Hopefully, we will see more details as the holiday season draws near.
