Those extra stories might only be on the Switch.
It seems Square is unsure whether Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age will be receiving the new content that’s coming as part of the recently-announced definitive edition, Dragon Quest XI S.
As you might recall, Nintendo announced during its Direct event last night that the definitive edition of DQ XI would be making its way to the Switch later this year. However, what wasn’t mentioned during the announcement was whether the original version on the PlayStation 4 and PC would get any of the new features, and when questioned on the matter by Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki, Square revealed it was ‘undecided’ on the matter.
Unsurprisingly, this is going to be a pretty important issue moving forward, as some of the new content coming to the definitive edition looks to be pretty substantial. In particular, there will be new stories where each character becomes the protagonist, and if we can use the quest line where we helped Sylvando reconcile with his father as a reference point, then a story where he’s the actual main character would be rather impressive. And considering that there will be such stories for every party member, there’s likely to be a truckload of content in a game that’s already filled to the brim with it.
Honestly, it’s a shame that this is still even up for discussion. Even if Dragon Quest XI owners have to pay a little extra to get the stories as DLC, it’s still better than adding in content that’s only available on one platform and potentially requiring many players to double-dip (and even get a Switch) if they want to see it.
Sure, it’s a nice gesture towards Switch owners who had to wait so long for the game to arrive, but hopefully Square does the right thing and makes the content available on every platform.
