The Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens DVD/Blu-ray won’t have an extended cut of the film. It will only have several deleted scenes that were cut from the theatrical version.
The movie’s director, J.J. Abrams, was recently interviewed by Entertainment Weekly. He discussed that Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens will only have deleted scenes as opposed to an extended version of the movie.
Abrams confirmed: “There will be deleted scenes, but not an extended version“. This follows the tradition of previous Star Wars DVD/Blu-ray releases. There has never been an extended cut similar to what Peter Jackson did with the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. The DVD/Blu-ray will just have multiple deleted scenes.
Abrams estimated that the longest cut of Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens would have been “two hours and 50 minutes“. The theatrical version was dropped down to only two hours and 17 minutes. Apparently, they cut out a few scenes that sounded very cool.
If you have seen the movie already, you may know that some scenes from the trailer are not in the movie. It’s possible these minor scenes could be a few of the deleted scenes. Even some toys featured characters and set pieces that did not make the final cut.
