Even though movie awards aren’t usually for blockbuster movies, Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens managed to be nominated in many technical categories at the 2016 BAFTA Awards.

Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens got several nominations. The bigger awards were all for smaller films that cater more towards film critics than fans. However, Mad Max: Fury Road got a fair amount of nominations for a blockbuster.

Anyway, The Force Awakens got nominated for: Original Music (John Williams), Production Design (Rick Carter, Darren Gilford, Lee Sandales), Sound (David Acord, Andy Nelson, Christopher Scarabosio, Matthew Wood, Stuart Wilson), Special Visual Effects (Chris Corbould, Roger Guyett, Paul Kavanagh, Neal Scanlan) and Rising Star (John Boyega).

The other blockbuster style movies that got nominated many times were Mad Max: Fury Road and The Martian. Matt Damon even got nominated for Best Actor for the latter film. Ridley Scott has been nominated for Best Director too.

Fury Road is pretty much going up against the same categories as Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens. However, it got nominated in additional categories such as Cinematography, Make Up and Hair, Editing and Costume Design.

Ant-Man was the only blockbuster nominated which was for Visual Effects. It’s notable that popular movies like Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World were not nominated in any category. One has to wonder if the Academy Awards will be snubbing the same movies too.
