The MPAA has now officially given Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens a rating. It has been rated PG-13.

The rating was revealed by FilmRatings.com. It just notes that the film has a PG-13 rating for “sci-fi action violence“.

Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens is only the second Star Wars film to get the PG-13 rating. The other film to get this rating was Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.

Whether or not the new film is as violent and dark as Revenge of the Sith remains to be seen. It’s a sign that it might be darker than the other movies which only received a PG rating.

Star Wars: A New Hope nearly received a G rating. The only scene that prevented it from from getting a G rating was the scene that saw the charred remains of Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen.

There is nothing wrong with Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens getting a PG-13 rating. This could mean the stakes are higher for the heroes and it might show how evil the likes of Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma can be.
