Star Wars Battlefront, one of the biggest and most anticipated games of 2015, won’t include a single-player campaign. We’ve known this for a while, and even had DICE’s general manager blame its absence on the impending release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. However, in a new interview between Gamespot and Peter Moore we learn a bit more about the process that went into the decision.

Essentially, according to Moore, Star Wars Battlefront won’t have a single-player campaign because “few people actually play the single-player on these kinds of games.” The decision was made, as is usually the case with big budget games, long before release.

“You make a decision, years out, and you plan for what the world looks like when a game ships in two or three years. That’s about the intuitiveness about the executive producer, and his or her vision for the game. Between when a dev team starts work on a game, and when it finishes, the world becomes a different place.

“I remember when we started work on Star Wars: The Old Republic; at the time, the model to go for was subscription. By the time we had the game ready, the model to go for wasn’t subscriptions. That’s why we had to stop the game, and rebuilt it as a free-to-play title with microtransactions, but even then there were some people who said they wanted to keep their subscriptions.”

As far as Star Wars Battlefront, and its lack of a single-player campaign is concerned, Moore explained while AAA games with a single-player campaign do traditionally sell better than those that don’t, the data also says that few players actually dive into that portion of the game, at least with games like Battlefront.
