Star Wars is about to get a little help from Westeros. Disney CEO Bob Iger has announced that the next movie will be from David Benioff & D.B. Weiss.

Last week it was reported that Disney had scheduled three new Star Wars movies after the upcoming Rise of Skywalker. The dates were December 2022, 2024, and 2026. Although Disney was forthcoming with dates, we were left in the dark as to which ones we’d be getting first.

In a tweet earlier today, Iger set the record straight:

The next #StarWars film to be released after the end of the Skywalker Saga will be by #GameOfThrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. $DIS

It’s Benioff and Weiss who are going to kick things off with their take on a galaxy far far away. Little is known about the duo’s Star Wars film. We are sure to get more info once the Skywalker trilogy wraps up this December.

It seems like the GoT duo and Rian Johnson will be discussing their mutual plans moving forward. Their respective new movies might not be directly related, but it’s not impossible to think they will be connected in some way. Shared universes are huge right now, so it only makes sense for Star Wars to continue this trend.

In the meantime, the Game of Thrones series finale hits HBO next Sunday, ending what was arguably an epic eight-season run. Fans of the show have been very vocal on their opinions of this final season. Some have enjoyed the shorted run thus far, but a majority of viewers have not been happy with some of the decisions.

Regardless of what people think of the final Thrones episodes, Benioff and Weiss are still two of the hottest Hollywood producers of the moment. If they can take some of the GoT magic and infuse it into the Star Wars universe, it might be just what the franchise needs.
