A release window for the final season and revival of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the fan-favorite animated series, was announced at the D23 expo. Many unfinished Clone Wars storylines will finally be completed in season 7 when it releases on February 2020 exclusively for the Disney Plus streaming service.
The final season will complete the series in 12 episodes after being canceled in 2014. Director Dave Filoni is confident in ending the storylines he and George Lucas started so long ago. Filoni stated (via EW):
The original series was released on Cartoon Network after a theatrical movie. It ran for six seasons and featured several storylines from a variety of characters – famous, sidelined and new. The series was largely successful in humanizing clone troopers and creating intriguing storylines along with some silly Jar Jar Binks episodes. We won’t talk about those.
The Clone Wars was largely known for the introduction of Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan Ahsoka Tano, who grew into one of the best characters, and a surprisingly mature Darth Maul storyline.
Both of these characters never had a fulfilling storyline due to an untimely cancellation. The final 12 episodes promise to finish their story threads. An upcoming storyline includes following Ahsoka as she gets tangled up in the criminal underworld after leaving the Jedi Order. A team-up between Cad Bane, a newly introduced bounty hunter, and a young Boba Fett is also highly anticipated. Lastly, fans are looking forward to finishing Darth Maul’s story because season 5 left us with a major cliffhanger.
The Clone Wars release window was one of many public Star Wars announcements at the D23 expo including a trailer for The Mandalorian, a new Obi-Wan Kenobi series, and a new poster for Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.
