A new trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker released at the D23 Expo and it teases “Dark Rey” along with many other alluring shots. Previously fans were intrigued by the ominous laugh of Emperor Palpatine at the end of the first trailer and the title itself, which hints at a major reveal for the main character.
Disney sure loves to build hype by releasing captivating teases for major plot points. Of course, we can’t take anything at face value since movie trailers love to trick us.
The two-minute trailer starts with a montage of scenes from every Star Wars movie to date. This views like a tribute since The Rise of Skywalker will end the Skywalker era. The trailer shows the main characters looking upon a desert civilization, Carrie Fisher as General Leia, which is a recycled shot, C-3PO with red eyes (that droid loves his red), a staple big laser, and a showdown between Kylo Ren and Rey on a destroyed Death Star. This is promising in and of itself since Disney’s Star Wars movies lack in lightsaber duels.
Lastly, the ending shot of Rey in a dark hood holding a double-bladed red lightsaber is the most intriguing. People jump to conclusions but this could very well be a vision. The thought of the dark side has been placed in Rey’s head by the likes of Kylo Ren, but she has always been strongly rooted as a Jedi.
The Rise of Skywalker is the third installment for the Disney iteration of Star Wars. People have all kinds of opinions on these films, both good and bad. The first movie, The Force Awakens, was directed by J.J. Abrams and received a largely positive reaction but was criticized for being a carbon copy of A New Hope. The second movie, The Last Jedi, was directed by Rian Johnson and had a more mixed reaction since fans did not like Johnson’s direction with major characters and his fulfillment of some plot points.
J.J Abrams once again takes the helm for this final installment, which realizes on December 20, 2019. It’s definitely not the last of Star Wars with Benioff and Weiss (Game of Thrones) and Rian Johnson planning trilogies of their own.
