One of the more valuable fish you can catch in Stardew Valley is a Sturgeon, though not for its base price. You can place these valuable fish in a fish pond to produce Sturgeon Roe, which is used to make the ever-valuable Caviar. Here’s where you can catch Sturgeon, and all the ways to utilize them.

Where to Catch a Sturgeon

To catch a Sturgeon, you’ll want to head to the mountain lake during either Summer or Winter. However, you’ll need to head there before 7 PM, because they cannot be caught after that time. If it’s raining, you’re in luck, because it increases the chances of catching this valuable fish. Rainy summer days are your best bet, and rainy winter days are the worst days, though a rainy winter day is only possible with a Rain Totem.

Cast your rod as far from shore as possible, because the further out you are, the best chances you’ll have of finding a Sturgeon.

Interestingly, you can just purchase a Sturgeon from Krobus, if you don’t feel like catching one. On Wednesdays, there’s a random chance of Krobus stocking them in his Sewer shop. To access the Sewers, you’ll need the Rusty Key, which Gunther gives you after you donate 60 items to the museum.

It’s also worth noting that the Stardew Valley 1.5 update, which was recently released, comes with a new item called Magic Bait. This special bait allows you to catch fish out of season, time, and weather conditions they normally require. This means that, with some Magic Bait, you can theoretically catch Sturgeon at the mountain lake at any time. However, it’s hard to control what you fish up with this method.

How to Use

You can sell Sturgeon for a base price of 200g, though they’ll fetch a bit more at higher qualities and with the right fishing skill professions. An Iridium-quality Sturgeon sold by someone with both the Fisher and Angler professions will net a nice 600g. However, it’s much more valuable to place Sturgeon in a fish pond. Here, they’ll produce Roe, which, when placed into a Preserves Jar, will turn into Caviar in four days. Caviar has a nice base price of 500g (700g with the Artisan profession).

There are a few other uses for Sturgeon, though. You’ll need to donate one to the Community Center as part of the Lake Fish Bundle at the Fish Tank. They can also be used to make Sashimi, Maki Rolls, or Quality Fertilizer, though any fish can be used for each of these recipes. Lastly, Sturgeon can be combined with cloth at a sewing machine to make the Fishing Vest clothing item.

If you’d like to give out Sturgeon as gifts, you might not impress many people in Stardew Valley. Willy loves them, a handful of people are neutral toward them, and most others hate or dislike them.
