Todd Howard and GamesBeat had an interesting conversation about Bethesda Game Studios and the next few titles coming from the developer at GameLab in Barcelona, and among the other things they discussed Starfield.

The new, sci-fi IP from BGS is said to have been in the making since the end of the development of Fallout 4, in 2015, even though the plan to do something like that, quite different from medieval fantasy and post-apocalyptic, was in place since 2004.

“After Fallout 4 ended. End of 2015? But back when we — 2004, we had made a list of what we might want to do in the future. Epic science fiction game, that’s always been on my mind. Post-apocalyptic, Fallout, was our first choice. Sci-fi was our second at the time, when we got the Fallout license. We were going to do our own post-apocalyptic universe if we didn’t get Fallout,” Howard said about when the work on Starfield was kickstarted.

“We just talked about it, and then I guess it really picked up steam — we’re going to do this, register the trademark — about five years ago. Then we would talk about it from time to time during that period. What are we going to do? And we started work right after Fallout 4 was finished, November 2015.”

Hearing news like this, it doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait that long, although – with Fallout 76 out in November and chatter about the game being at least cross-gen – there might be still a couple years for things to really ramp up.
