Bethesda’s upcoming RPG revealed some of its gameplay last night, and it has now been confirmed that the Starfield protagonist will also not have the gift of speech in a huge plot twist. This highly anticipated sci-fi RPG could very well be one of the biggest games of 2023, and fans have been pressing their ears close to the ground for any information regarding the game.

Watch the gameplay trailer below if you haven’t seen it already.

Why Doesn’t the Starfield Protagonist Have a Voice?

The Starfield protagonist won’t have a voice because the dialogue scenes will be presented in first-person throughout. With this reveal, Bethesda’s upcoming RPG follows games like Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, and Oblivion in not giving the hero their own voice. But Fallout 4 chose to break that trend by allowing the star to speak, now becoming involved in these lengthy conversations.

With Fallout 4, Bethesda opted for a much more cinematic approach to the game’s storytelling, with the game then revolving around a third-person perspective during the dialogue scenes, along with the fully-voiced protagonist. But this decision was met with uproar because fans felt that the added voice took some magic away from the game. It forced the developer to limit the detail of the conversation options compared to previous titles from Bethesda.

After much fan feedback, Bethesda’s upcoming RPG has reverted to the old ways: the tried and tested method of having a mute hero. Don’t assume that this means the Starfield protagonist will lack any character because of his speech problem; that would be a rookie mistake.

We got a good look at the Starfield protagonist and the rest of the game at last weekend’s Xbox Showcase, which offered fans an excellent taste of what to expect when the game finally drops (after a delay or two) in the first half of next year. This is a game to look forward to.
