A new website called Steamspy has opened the floodgates in terms of data about games on Valve’s Steam platform. While it might not be 100% accurate, many sources have confirmed that it is close enough to be used for metrics and sales information, which is something we previously had very little insight into. NeoGaf user Kyougar has used this info to figure out how many Steam games have sold over a million copies since the platform launched in 1998. In total there were 227 games released on Steam that sold over a million copies. Check out the full list by clicking here, or take a look at the top ten below:

  • Men of War: Assault Squad 2 – 18,887,301
  • Counter-Strike: Source – 13,687,323
  • Half-Life 2: Lost Coast – 13,483,312
  • Unturned – 13,140,974
  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – 12,134,826
  • Left 4 Dead 2 – 11,970,999
  • Half-Life 2: Deathmatch – 11,426,195
  • Counter-Strike – 11,168,089
  • Half-Life 2 – 8,776,362
  • Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes  – 8,670,493

Other notable games in the top 25 are The Elder Scorlls V: Skyrim, Portal, Sid Meier’s Civilization, and Terraria. One thing that many of the very top games have in common is that they featured a free weekend. Men of War and many of the Half-Life and Counter-Strike entries had one, which boosted their numbers significantly. The list doesn’t contain games that are offered for free all or most of the time, such as DOTA 2 and Team Fortress 2 which are both in the top 3 in terms of owners.

Another bit of info that was gleamed here was that the number of games being released on Steam might be exploding, but the million sellers has remained fairly stable over the past few years. There have already been 522 games released in 2015, compared to 581 released in all of 2013, and only 383 in all of 2012.
