The movie adaptation of Stephen King’s short story The Boogeyman is moving from a streaming release to a theater release. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie from Disney’s 20th Century Studios was initially made for Hulu, which Disney also owns. However, the film had a strong test screening in December, which motivated producers and executives to give the film a theatrical release. The Boogeyman, which has Stephen King’s “thumbs up,” will now be released on June 2 in theaters. It is one of many planned adaptations of King’s works to release this year, including Salem’s Lot (provided that one doesn’t get another delay).

Stephen King’s Classic Short Story ‘The Boogeyman’ is Coming to Theaters

Stephen King’s The Boogeyman was originally published in 1973 in an issue of Cavalier magazine. It can now be read in King’s short story collection entitled Night Shift. According to Cinema Blend, it was previously adapted as a short film in 1982 and again in 2010. However, this will be the first full-length feature adaptation of the story. The Boogeyman centers on a man who believes his three children all fell victim to a supernatural entity called the Boogeyman. He recounts his children’s deaths to a psychiatrist, and during that session, a terrifying twist takes place, confirming his fears.

Stephen King’s work has been adapted for film and TV many times, with many hits (The Shining and Carrie) and misses (Dreamcatcher and The Tommyknockers). The Boogeyman and Salem’s Lot are among the many adaptations fans can look forward to, including Fairy Tale and The Dark Tower TV series. Fans can only hope that this movie adaptation of The Boogeyman will prove to be among the successes.
