Steven Universe has returned from hiatus sooner than expected and announced a mini-series titled Steven Universe Future. Very little is known about the series so far, but it appears that this short mini-series – or final season with a new name or whatever it might be -will be the definitive end of the series following the recent release of Steven Universe: The Movie.

Steven Universe as a series has been going on since 2013. It had a slow beginning to many, seemingly a relatively decent show with nothing to hide, but over time it became clear that there was much more brewing under the surface than just silly shenanigans and alien moms. The show stars the titular Steven Universe, a young boy who finds himself in the center of a massive historical crossroads for an alien species known as Gems, and who through hard work a kind, new perspective on things around him grows as a person and helps those around him to do the same, all the while keeping the Earth and his friends safe.

The show is famous for its message of compassion and understanding, as well as it’s coverage of mature themes such as coping with loss, abusive relationships, growing up feeling like an outsider, and constant nods to and appreciation of the LGBTQ+ community. When and where the show would end has been a topic of discussion for some time now, following the rather conclusive end of Season 5, and the even more recent events of Steven Universe: The Movie, but it appears that the end will be coming sooner than we anticipated. Cartoon Network describes Steven Universe Future as a “new epilogue limited series”, which is very vague, but it appears that this new chapter of the series will tie up some loose ends from the last few seasons, and have the Crystal Gems tackling some new villains in the future setting established by the movie. More details are sure to come soon, and many fans like myself are very excited to see how it will all come to a close. The future is looking bright.

Steven Universe Future will be coming soon to Cartoon Network. You can watch the new intro for the limited-series down below:
