Cat-loving gamers quickly flocked to the rich and engaging world of Stray. This game plops you into a cat’s shoes (or feet). Telling the tale of a stray cat separated from its family, the game offers a stunning look at a futuristic urban world populated by robots. As players travel through this world, experiencing it all only with the abilities of a cat, some questions do pop up. Like many other open-world adventure games, Stray begs the question of whether you can actually customize your cat.

Can You Customize the Cat in Stray?

Stray easily handles the adventure part of this open-world tale intricately and compellingly. With how easy it is to fall in love with our ginger cat protagonist, some players are still curious about customization.

So, can you actually customize the cat in Stray? Well, if you were looking forward to it, we’re sorry to disappoint you with the answer. You cannot customize the cat in Stray.

Throughout the game, you will always play as this particular feline. This is because, according to the devs, the game follows the adventures of this cat, specifically. Also, the cat in Stray has real-life inspirations, so being unable to customize it in this adventure game isn’t a surprise.

The co-founders of BlueTwelve Studio, Koola and Viv, are the owners of cats Murtaugh and Riggs. They used those cats as inspiration when creating our virtual cat buddy in Stray. Additionally, most members of the team are cat owners. There are even two studio cats, Jun and Oscar, working with them while they created the game.

With all this in mind, it’s clear why the devs wanted a specific cat you can’t customize in Stray. This way, more focus is on the story and interesting gameplay rather than dressing up the cat. You can spend some time with your head stuck in a paper bag, though. Even still, no matter how many items you collect, our cat will only wander with B-12 on its back.
