In one of the most cryptic teases of the year, it has been announced on Twitter (seen below) that Studio Ghibli and Lucasfilm will collaborate on a secret project. The most likely candidate of the IP would be Star Wars, but there is no way of knowing as the video is silent. All we get is the logos of both companies without John Williams’ score or anything else to fill up the void.

While Lucasfilm has plenty under its belt in terms of IP, Studio Ghibli would likely work on a Star Wars project, or at least it would make sense. There is more being worked on in the galaxy far, far away rather than the Nazi-punching adventurer. As we got a Disney+ anime anthology with Star Wars: Visions, we could see an episode from the legendary anime studio in spring 2023 when it returns for season 2. Still, it seems big enough that it could warrant something more substantial.

The anime studio has become legendary for its filmography and for director Hayao Miyazaki. Its debut was Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984. Over the years, some of the most beloved films include Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro. Its latest was in 2020 with Earwig and the Witch.

At the current state of Lucasfilm, it would be fitting for a Studio Ghibli collaboration. The studio has been focusing on the Disney+ series for Star Wars. While most of that has been live-action with The Mandalorian and, most recently, Andor, we have seen some animation. Visions and The Bad Batch are some of the most recent animation series that have propped up to expand the universe. With a vast playground, there is plenty to take an anime twist on.
