Studio MayDay is getting a company rebrand after attaining new investment from Chinese mega-corporation Tencent, with the New Zealand-based studio now being rebranded as Riffraff Games. The figure for the deal has not been disclosed, but it’s expected to be quite the significant sum which means Tencent will take minority ownership of the company. The newly rebranded company will continue operating out of its New Zealand headquarters.

What does this rebranding of Studio MayDay mean?

So, now that the Studio MayDay company has rebranded and transformed into Riffraff Games, they haven’t left it long before working on some new titles, games that will include a third-person stealth-action game and could be released this year at some point – so keep an eye out for that one.

Leading the studio is Joshua Boggs, who founded the company in 2019 and will be known to fans everywhere as the man behind the multi-award-winning and hugely popular Framed series. As Joshua steers the ship, his talented team, which consists of talent that has experience with Electronic Arts, Creative Assembly, Weta, and a whole host of other developers, will be by his side every step of the way.

As well as this talented team of individuals, the company has also announced that it has hired Guy Blomberg as their studio director, formerly the content director at creative firm ReedPop. In a recent interview, Boggs said, “Tencent has been very supportive of our innovative roots and our desire to take creative risks.” Boggs went on to say that “The resources, the experience, and the mentorship they have provided has allowed Riffraff Games to pursue things we would never have thought would be possible. It is a truly exciting time for this studio”.

There was also another recent announcement involving Tencent, with the news that they have also become the majority shareholder in Rime developer Tequila Works. They are making waves in the gaming industry with these couple of acquisitions, so let’s see how it works out for everyone involved.
