The PlayStation 5 console might’ve passed 3 million units shipped since launch, but the fact is, it’s still hard to find in the wild. Yet, a US-based company that calls itself SUP3R5 has announced that it will be releasing an unofficial, PS2-inspired PS5 along with black DualSense controllers. The company said that it will open pre-orders for both the black PS5 and controller on January 8, 2021, at 3 PM EST, and is scheduled to be shipped in late Spring 2021.
SUP3R5 has stated that the production of the PS2-inspired black PS5 will only be limited to 304 units as a “callback” to the original PS2 release date (3.04.2000). The limited product will be sold at $649 for the digital version and $749 for the physical version. Meanwhile, the DualSense will cost $99 and only 500 of them will be produced. As a comparison, the normal white PS5 cost $399 and $499, while DualSense costs $69.99.
Unofficial, limited edition PS5s have been around for a while now. Previously, a UK-based company The Plate Station was selling PS5 custom plates and offered five different color variations for $39.99 each including PS1-inspired chromatic grey and matte black. Unfortunately though, it had to cancel all orders after receiving legal action from Sony. And a while back, a premier luxury customizing brand Truly Exquisite was also taking pre-orders for gold-plated PS5 as well as the gold DualSense controller and 3D Pulse headphones. They were sold for about $9400 and only 100 units per model were available to buy online.
Officially, Sony has somewhat confirmed that its next-gen console will be getting custom plates and designs for limited-edition releases. On LinkedIn, VP of UX Design at PlayStation Matt MacLaurin wrote that the PS5 chassis is customizable “in ways previous gens weren’t,” answering someone’s question regarding the potential of a matte black finish.
