In spooky news, the classic 2012 side-scrolling horror game Lone Survivor is getting a remake! Titled Super Lone Survivor, we already have some details about what changes we can expect to see. This exciting news was announced by the creator, Jasper Byrne, yesterday (on Halloween of all days). Lone Survivor was a relatively early example of the 2D indie horror trend and was warmly received by critics at the time. Often fondly remembered and included in top indie lists, this was a prime candidate for a remaster. It’s great to have this announced!

What Are We Getting In Super Lone Survivor?

So what should we expect to see from Super Lone Survivor? Well, for a start this is a full remake rather than a remaster. The game has been fully rewritten with a modern engine, and will also support 60fps and 4k visuals. It will also include new effects not seen in the original, such as parallax scrolling. There is even a hint that the game may include difficulty settings. I remember the original being a pretty tough cookie back in 2012, so this may be good for those who want to experience the story, and not get killed by the baddies! Finally, there will be a whole new scenario added for Super Lone Survivor, titled Ascending. The developer states that they’re unsure how long this new section will be, but that they don’t want the length to spiral out of control.

A Spooky Good Time!

I’m personally very excited for Super Lone Survivor. I bought the original back when I was in university and absolute piled hours into it. The 2D format is a tough one for scary games, but Lone Survivor pulled it off expertly. With distorted, unnerving visuals, and an atmosphere as thick as soup, Lone Survivor was genuinely terrifying. The way best I can describe it is as a 2D Silent Hill game. I really can’t recommend it enough! Super Lone Survivor releases next year on PC and Nintendo Switch.
