The Super Mario series creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo have officially revealed that the release date for the upcoming Super Mario movie by Universal Studios and Illumination has been delayed to Spring 2023. The movie had been previously slated for a release sometime this December.
This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

Super Mario Movie Delay Announcement and Details
On Monday evening, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto shared a message on Twitter via Nintendo’s official accounts, stating that after consulting with Chris Pratt, the official voice for Mario in the movie, they have “decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America.”
Universal Studios and Illumination were releasing the Super Mario movie in December of 2022, targeting a theatrical release for the holiday season. However, those plans have been delayed and changed for North America and Japan.
They revealed the official voice cast of the Super Mario Bros. movie back in September of 2021 and announced that Chris Pratt would voice the titular Italian plumber. The remaining voice ensemble included Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike, a character who first appeared in Wrecking Crew, one of the earliest games to feature Mario back in 1985. The official Mario voice actor, Charles Martinet, will have a few cameo appearances in the film.
Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will direct the movie, having worked together on the Cartoon Network animated series, Teen Titans Go!, including the spin-off film Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. The script will be written by Matthew Fogel, most known for his work on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, as well as another upcoming Illumination film, Minions: The Rise of Gru.
